Trans Experience Research Project

Hi, I’m Brynn (they/them). I am a trans artist and designer living in beautiful Portland, Oregon.

I’m currently working on a research project that will help inspire and inform a piece I am making for a group exhibition in New York this November. The experience I’m designing aims to communicate what it feels like to live as a trans person in today’s world. This work is both personal and collective. Our stories are so often misrepresented, flattened, or ignored entirely, and I believe it’s important to create space for trans voices to be heard in their beautiful truth from the people that live it.

As part of this process, I’m speaking with trans-identified individuals who are open to having one-on-one conversations, each about an hour long, where they can share their journeys and lived experiences. Beyond informing the exhibition, I hope to create an archive from these conversations to help preserve and amplify our history, in our own words.

I want to acknowledge that I may bring up topics that are complex or emotionally challenging. These conversations are important to me, and I approach them with care and respect. That said, I fully recognize and support your right to set boundaries around what you’re comfortable discussing. If something feels like too much or isn’t a topic you want to engage with, you are absolutely welcome to let me know or step away from the conversation, no explanation needed. My goal is to create space for honest dialogue, but never at the expense of anyone’s emotional well-being.

Details

  • The interviews will last around 1 hour and can be in person or virtual.

  • I would like to record the audio of each interview. This will be used by me(and only me) to inspire and inform the content of the installation. I may wish to use some recordings directly in my experience. If that is that case I will get explicit informed consent from the party involved.

  • Participants can remain completely anonymous.

  • I'm hoping to build an archive of these experiences to share more widely. With permission, I’d like to either make it publicly available in my own archive that I will host or submit it to an established LGBTQ archive so these stories can be part of our collective history. Inclusion in this part of the project is entirely opt-in and will only happen with your clear consent.

Please reach out if you have any questions or just wish to speak to me more about the project before you commit. I am happy to hop on a call to chat before you commit to an actual interview. You can contact me at brynn.caputo@proton.me or Instagram at @brynndlebop.
